Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a program which allows students to take a short online quiz after each book he or she reads. Each book is worth a designated number of points. Most picture books are 0.5 while beginning chapter books are 1.0. Some students read books that are 6.0 points! These tests MUST be taken at school (as the program only allows) or at the Aplington Public Library during the summer.
Students may go to AR Book Finder to see how many points their books are worth.
If a student is accessing this website from school, he or she may take AR tests at the Accelerated Reader site.
For many students, their username is the first letter of their first name followed by their entire last name. The password is their lunch numbers.
The Process:
1. Students take the STAR reading test on the computer to get a reading level.
2. Mr. Sammons takes those data and gives each student an entire year's range, such as 2.5 to 3.5.
3. Mr. Sammons then gives each student a point goal for the trimester.
4. The goal is written on a poster with a "hidden message" and hangs on the wall.
5. As students pass their A.R. tests, the program gives them totals, which can be recorded on the wall chart.
6. At the end of each trimester, Mr. Sammons evaluates the point total, number of quizzes, and percentage correct in order to determine new goals.
