Writing
The writing program in third grade is composed of two parts: Cursive and Writer’s Workshop with Lucy Culkins resources. The cursive component happens mostly during the first trimester and stories mostly in the second and third trimesters
Aside from these two components, we also write in our literacy program, our daily oral language, and pen pal programs.
Cursive:
In third grade, we use the modern Zaner-Bloser cursive. We do not use a workbook. Instead, we use a cursive overlay and write words relevant to what we are learning. A good way to see if you're looking at the right cursive is: 1) There aren't any "curly Q's" at the beginnings of capital letters such as N, K, C, etc. and 2) The capital letter Q does NOT look like a number 2, it resembles closer to a printed capital Q.
A link to the cursive alphabet can be found HERE.
Writing:
We use resources from Lucy Culkins which implement the writer’s workshop process and Evan-Moor Daily 6-Trait Writing. We also have three major writing projects in third grade. Each project involves the students pre-writing for ideas, writing, and editing. Each student will be using a separate rubric for each writing project. When the paper scores well on the rubric, the student may be finished with the writing and complete a published copy.
The writing projects are:
Personal Narrative
Research Paper (combined with Animals science unit)
Instructional Writing (combined with Jalapeño Bagels literacy story)
Aside from these two components, we also write in our literacy program, our daily oral language, and pen pal programs.
