Individualized Spelling
Spelling in Third Grade is individualized.
What this means is that your child will have a spelling folder with a weekly spelling list designed to his or her abilities.
Here's how it works:
1. Each student takes a "Pre-Test" of the 15 spelling words from our reading stories. Every student does these.
2. Words spelled incorrectly go on his/her SPELLING LIST. Words spelled correctly are not tested again.
3. The SPELLING LIST must have 12 words on it. So, if a student got enough correct on the Pre-Test, he/she must add words to the list. These words may come from the words listed on his/her spelling card (which include words from student writings that have been misspelled), from the Words-To-Know list I give them (which range in difficulty from third to fifth grade), or words from stories that he/she has been reading.
*** In the unlikely event that a student misses 13, 14, or 15 words on the Pre-Test and since the SPELLING LIST only includes 12 words, the additional words will be added to his/her spelling card and used at the next opportunity.
*** If a student misspells a word on the SPELLING TEST it is automatically added to the following week's SPELLING LIST.
*** Your child should be bringing home a new spelling list EVERY THURSDAY.
Each FRIDAY your child should be bringing home their spelling test.
